Walking by and the white and red paint job, checkered old school tablecloth, and the words "pie shop" intrigued me, but thought for sure they'd have no vegan pies. Not only can pies be veganized (as stated on the menu) but there's The Vegan (cherry tomatoes, spinach, vegan parmesan). The pizza - Detroit style pizza. Deliciously thick and oily. Comes out on a baking pan. Greek salad - hold the cheese. They made it with feta by accident and remade it from scratch when I pointed out (I've seriously seen restaurants try to pick out the cheese from a salad after accidentally making it with cheese. Just no.) Fries - the fries were CRAZY good. Can't really beat crispy freshly fried potatoes. Just like most of Aspen, staffed by young seasonal workers, all very friendly. The inside is pretty much like a tiny diner. We took advantage of the window bar and enjoyed looking at the mountains and doggies in the dog park. Finally, nice beer list, which never hurts.
The pizza is thick AF and square. The outdoor area to drink beers at and eat slices is clutch. Philip, the bartender is knowledgeable about what to hit up in Aspen. It's a spot you wanna get a quick drink and a slice at, for lunch ($8 combo), and then again after you've drank too much at the local bars, at midnight-ish.
We were in that awkward time in the afternoon where you feel a little hunger, but don't want to eat a full meal because it's close to dinner. We decided to stop by Aspen Pie Shop, initially thinking it was a dessert place. When we discovered it was Detroit-style pizza and there was a selection for Wagyu meatball slice, we were intrigued and ordered a slice. Although I couldn't discern the wagyu taste, I love a good meatball pizza slide and it definitely hit the spot. Their ordering ticket machine was having issues and we ended up getting a second slice for free because of that! Although other reviews say the staff are rude, I would disagree and say that the staff are just super relaxed/chill. The shop is also super casual and basically self-serve. If you are feeling a little bit hangry and need a quick bite, Aspen Pie Shop is a great place to stop by!
A MOUNTAIN Of CARBS Aspen is a ghost town during shoulder season. Luckily, the Aspen Pie Shop is one of the few places still open where you can grab an affordable lunch. Plus, you can't beat the view of Ajax! I chose the Spicy Chicken Club Wrap ($13), which came with lots of chips. This sandwich was massive! Plenty of roasted chicken wrapped with romaine, bacon, avocado, tomato and spicy ranch turned this into a wonderful lunch with a kick. My sister-in-law selected the Greek Salad ($14). She thought the mix of tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, kalamata olives, feta cheese and lemon dressing was fine, but we both agreed I made the best choice. We practically had the place to ourselves for much of our meal, so it was surprising when we discovered on the following day that they ran our credit card not just for our lunch but someone else's! Next time, we'll pay cash. In light of that, I had to give this place only 4 stars. Shopping for a pie or more, this is still a good choice if you avoid using a credit card.
